Yeast Infections – Why do They Happen
It is not always clear or simple to identify the causes of yeast infections in men, women or even children. The first thing those suffering from recurring yeast infections do is to look for what the cause is. After all once you know that you can better defend yourself as with any other illnesses.
A yeast infection is a fungal infection from the Candida strain. Symptoms vary from adult to adult and child to child. It can be uncomfortable or even painful and is something adults are often relevant to visit a doctor about because they have a sense of shame about it. Babies who live in wet diapers too much are prone, and can also get Thrush, an oral yeast infection, from feeding utensils such as bottle.
In men it appears as penile yeast infection and happens when they have sexual intercourse with an infected female partner who has vaginal yeast infection. The woman's vaginal opening contains the yeast and as the penis penetrates the yeast can get into the opening of the penis and move through it to the urethra. Itching is a very common symptom and can be mild to very bad. The shaft of the penis can show signs of blisters and lesions. There is often pain in the area and the man may find he is unable to perform sexually as well as having problems urinating.
A vaginal yeast infection is the most common yeast infection which is why it is mistakenly thought of as a female problem. This is because the vagina is such a perfect environment for the yeast to grow. Dark, moist and warm. Reasons for women getting the infection vary though quite often there are hormonal causes so if a woman is on her period, going through the menopause, on birth control pills or pregnant, she is at a higher risk to get a yeast infection. Women always wearing tight under wear made of synthetic materials need to realize they are encouraging the yeast to stay and flourish as there is not enough air circulation around the genital area.
When you believe you have a yeast infection, male or female, you need to stop having sex unless you are using a condom. Otherwise you are infecting your partner and even if you are treating yourself, the yeast is being passed back and forth between you so you are never clear of it. It just becomes a nasty yeast cycle. Also if you are not exclusive to each other you are passing on the infection to other unfortunate sexual partners.
