How The Plug-In Hybrid Cars Are Different From The Standard Hybrid Cars?

One can say that the hybrid cars are next generation cars. However, this technology is not very old, but it already has stamped its brilliance in the motor industry. The old version of hybrid cars is known as standard hybrid cars, which when introduced in the market, made people overjoyed. This car is cheap, and one can easily maintain it. Eco-friendly characteristics and fuel efficiency are the two plus points of this car. The newer version of hybrid cars is known as plug-in hybrid cars. These cars are not in the market yet though General Motors, and Toyota Motors has introduced some prototypes of these cars, which suggest that these cars will be more fuel efficient than standard hybrid cars, and also would be environment friendly, because of less emissions. The ground realities are still unknown, and could only be unveiled when people would buy them, and experience the drive.

The engine of standard hybrid cars is a lot different from the conventional car. A hybrid car contains two engines. The two are named as backed engine, and an electric powered engine. Gasoline is used as a fuel that generates electricity. The electricity generated is then stored in the metallic standby batteries. Engine power is switched from gasoline to electric automatically when the batteries are charged. To propel the car, electricity is the primary source and gasoline is required to switch the power on. The batteries are made of Lithium, or Nickel, which can be charged very easily from 120 V electric power outlets. So, a power source in the house can be used to charge a plug-in hybrid car. This technology is superbly environment friendly, and saves fuel.

Fuel efficiency is the main feature of hybrid cars. The new plug-in hybrid cars are far less more efficient than standard hybrid cars, as plug-in hybrid cars claim to make 70+ mpg than standard hybrid cars. It looks too good to be true, obviously with this amazing new technology, we have to use less fuel, and soon, we will be able to bring a green revolution in the world.

A typical hybrid car uses bio-fuels or gasoline, while the plug-in hybrid cars rarely depend on gasoline. This is the reason why plug in hybrid cars are a lesser danger to our environment.

As plug-in hybrid cars offer great functions, and more efficiency, these cars are expensive than standard hybrid cars. One of the reasons of its expensiveness is the cost of its batteries.

Plug-in hybrid cars are heavier than the traditional hybrid cars. The reason again is the heavy batteries, which are the basic feature of such cars. Owing to the fact that plug-in hybrids run on cleaner fuel than the standard hybrid cars, their maintenance cost is supposed to be lower than the standard hybrid cars.

The most interesting comparison between the two cars is the different places from where they get charged. A plug-in hybrid will have to make only a few trips to the gas station, because it shall be on the charging mode when one is at work or sleeping at home at night.

Both cars are designed for specific purposes. If you want to take the tour of city or go on a long drive, standard hybrid cars are best for it. For short tours like from home to office, plug-in hybrid cars should be your first choice.
