Airsoft Guns And How They Are Powered
There are three means of power used for airsoft guns; spring, electric, and gas. These three types of power also give rise to various guns that harness it, such as; shot guns, machine guns, rifles, and pistols. Replicates of real firearms, these airsoft machines are designed to only use 6-8mm wide projectiles.
When purchasing an airsoft firearm, many considerations need to be taken into account. These aspects include; the rate of fire, the life of the battery, the size of the gun itself, and even the holding capacity of the magazine. Alternative features that are also kept in mind are possibly the weight, reliability, range, how realistic it is, and customization.
Spring Airsoft Guns - "Springers" were the first firearms produced in the airsoft variety. These were only able to fire one projectile at a time and needed to be re-cocked each time the person wanted to fire a BB.
Electric Force - Automatic Electric Airsoft Guns, also known as AEGs, tend to be the most common ones used today. They are powered by batteries that are rechargeable, which are in control of the gearbox inside. This internal gearbox is what fires the projectiles out from the gun. Early airsoft pistols lacked a small enough motor to actually fit properly in the housing, which caused weak BB velocities. The firing range of these AEGs was greater than gas pistols.
Four magazine capacities are available for AEGs; real, low, mid, and high. For holding less than 30 rounds, the real-capacity magazines are used. As for the range of 30-80 BBs, the low-capacity version is used. When using 80-150 rounds, the mid-capacity is called for and high-capacity magazines are capable of holding 200-500 plus rounds. There are also drum magazines which allow the option of being able to hold thousands of BBs at one time.
Gas Force - When gas-powered guns for airsoft came about, they offered either an internal or an external gas chamber. Reservoirs on the inside used CFC gas, while the external chambers contained carbon dioxide under extreme pressure. The realistic look to these gas powered guns make them more popular than the other versions. By enhancing the quality of gas powered guns for airsoft and using "green gas" instead of CFC and carbon dioxide, these gas powered varieties are becoming more accessible.
Many manufacturers have recently started to produce adapters that will screw directly onto a propane tank, enabling the use of pure propane, which is cheaper than the green gas.
Having the gas contained inside the magazine, these guns can be loaded and unloaded the same way a real firearm can. A typical magazine for a gas powered gun holds 10-20 rounds, while a high capacity magazine will hold over 50 rounds. Early airsoft gun models were mostly plastic, with a few metal parts inside.
Many early models of airsoft guns were made from ABS plastic, except for a few internal parts requiring movement. New models from Taiwan and China have external and internal metal parts. With the use of aluminum and plastic, many airsoft firearms will look realistic but be much lighter to carry.
