Road bikes differ from other types of bikes and "mountain bike" or "hybrids" in particular in that they are made to be lightweight and speedy traveling on paved surfaces. Generally they have very thin tires and a light frame, as well as several gears or "speeds" to help riders maintain a high speed while on the road or in traffic.
It's a good idea to ride your road bike on bicycle trails or in a bike lane when possible. If you do choose to ride in traffic (as many bicycle commuters do), it's important to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing, or have lights (tail light and headlight) on your bike so you can easily seen by motorists. Keep to the right as generally you will be going slower than the other traffic, and obey the traffic laws, including stopping at intersections and signaling for turns. It's always smart to wear a helmet as well.
Going out for a ride with a bike club our touring with your family can be a lot fun on the weekends. Looking good is only half the battle. Feeling good by the end is the second part of the equation. Stay hydrated and look for a lightweight well made bike that won't be too heavy to ride for long distances.
If money is an issue (and it is for almost everyone!) consider buying a used higher-quality road bike. With savvy shopping and a tune up by your local bike shop, your used road bike should be just as good as new the next time you're ready to go out for a ride.
